Blackhawks recall Dominic Toninato, place Andrew Mangiapane on injured reserve

The Chicago Blackhawks placed winger Andrew Mangiapane on injured reserve and recalled forward Dominic Toninato from the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs on October 7, 2026, the club announced in its roster-moves release.
A key winger sidelined early
The injury dates to Chicago’s season opener against the Vegas Golden Knights, when Mangiapane left after 5:23 of scoreless ice time. Beat reporter Ben Pope reported a few days later that the winger was considered week-to-week with the lower-body injury, a designation that made the injured-reserve placement an expected formality rather than a surprise.
For a forward group that lost Mangiapane in game one, the timing is the sting. With no firm timeline beyond week-to-week, Chicago will carry a lineup hole for at least the near term. He has not recorded a point this season, his only appearance cut short by the injury.
Toninato fills the open spot
Toninato, 32, earns the recall on the strength of his Rockford production. He posted 16 goals and 43 points in 52 AHL games last season and added a goal in the IceHogs’ opener this year. Chicago signed him as an unrestricted free agent to a two-year, $1.7 million contract ($850K AAV) after his five-year run with the Winnipeg Jets.
The Winnipeg tenure was mostly a depth role: eight goals and 21 points in 104 games, a plus-8 rating and 8:43 of average ice time, with one outlier season of 77 games in 2021-22. He picked up one assist in eight games with the Blackhawks last season. A return date for Mangiapane is not specified.
